Michael Paez’s Career Year
The path to success is filled with adversity. Trying times that test one’s character, intention and ability. The pressure of consistency constantly weighing down like the force of gravity. It is up to the individual to use the stress of pressure to progress, or crumble to the will of life’s tests. Michael Paez has powered through many of life’s obstacles continuing to exhibit character worthy of praise and distinction.
On Monday, Coastal Carolina sophomore shortstop and long-time TekMatic Pro member, Michael Paez, was named the Big South Choice Hotel’s Player of the Week. During his hot streak, the sophomore recorded multi-hit games and scored at least two runs in three of CCU’s four contests, leading the Chanticleers to a 3-1 record and a second-place spot in the Big South. Paez batted .571 (8-14) with eight runs, five RBI, three doubles, a grand slam and three stolen bases during the week. He also scored game-winning runs in all three of his team’s wins.
Over the last 15 games, the sophomore has batted .469 (23-49) with 18 runs, 21 RBI, seven doubles, four home runs, seven stolen bases and nine sacrifice bunts. In terms of season totals thus far, Paez is currently ranked ninth in sacrifice bunts, 13th in doubles and 62nd in runs in all of Division-I baseball.
In mid-March he was given his first Player-of-the-Week nod, and he hasn’t looked back since. Behind Paez’ play, the Chanticleers (23-8, 7-2) have drastically improved their stock in the national standings, breaking into the top tier of teams in every major Division-I poll. They currently sit 25th in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll and 24th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA) rankings.
